Hellsing AU - Reminiscence

Everyone asked you, be it with their mouths or with their inquiring eyes, where you got your scar. And you would always answer the same in an undertone: I once fought a demon; this was the mark it left. You thought to yourself often that it was a mark of pride, deluding yourself into believing you earned it through your devotion to the Almighty God. Yet you would always catch yourself averting your gaze from the sight of it in the mirror to save you a trip back to that night you dangled from the spires atop the house of the Lord with Ghenna's gaping pits below, ready to swallow you up.

The night was filled with the lashes of flames and the eyes of the monster that burned brighter than the hottest embers showering down around you. He demanded of you something you could not give. You told him that part of you he wished to claim as his own belonged already to God.

You would not tell them the scar on your face was insignificant to the scar he left on your heart.

It was what the demon had wanted all along.
